Project Type: Cultural Design Exploration
Deliverables: Visual Identity, Editorial Layout
Year: 2021
Visit Vume is a branding and editorial design exploration that celebrates the rich pottery tradition of Vume, a small town in Ghana’s South Tongu District, near Sogakope in the Volta Region. The town is renowned for its skilled artisans and longstanding pottery practices, passed down through generations. This project aimed to highlight that cultural legacy and invite both residents and travelers to experience Vume’s craftsmanship firsthand.
The design objective was to reflect the timelessness and quiet strength of the town’s pottery through a restrained, elegant visual language. I paired a fine-width sans-serif typeface with a contrasting calligraphic font to create visual harmony and reflect the duality of structure and organic form found in pottery. Minimalist silhouette graphics and fine line illustrations were used to represent the vessels themselves, which are understated yet iconic.
An earthy, grounded color palette tied the visuals to the natural clay and materials used in the pottery process, while also evoking a sense of warmth and tradition. Through thoughtful typography, illustration, and layout, Visit Vume brings visibility to the artisanship of the town and reimagines how cultural storytelling can live within contemporary design.
